Soho Photo Gallery, Strong Lines, 2 by 2

This show will be at the Soho Photo Gallery from May 28 to June 22, 2025. There is an opening reception on May 29, from 6 to 8, and all are invited. The gallery is now in its gorgeous new space at 539 West 23 Street (Chelsea Art District), in Manhattan. For a show catalog, click here.

My prior Soho Photo Gallery shows have been mostly about people.  This show shifts the focus to geometry, design, and color, with an emphasis on (you guessed it) lines.  There are 32 color photographs, or 16 times 2.  Each photograph is joined with a second one (shown below as A and B), having a different subject but some common visual feature(s).  Part of the fun (I hope) is for the viewer to ask if the pairings make sense.

The subjects are mostly buildings or structures, because they have straight edges in abundance, although there are also some scaffolds, trains, hoists, glass panels, airplanes, playgrounds, cars, and lamps.  The lines are mostly straight, with a few graceful curves thrown in.

If anyone wants to find deep meaning in all this (lines are a direct path to God, lives are better pursued along a straight and narrow path), have a ball.  But for me, is it just aesthetics; visual play.

The photographs are available for purchase at the show (or by contacting the artist), matted with all archival materials to fit (with 3 inch margins, or more on one edge) in 20 by 24 inch black mat metal frames, for $600 (or $500 each for purchases of two or more). They are part of a limited edition of 10.

Studio Montclair’s Leach Gallery, Dwelling in Hope

The following three pictures from the People collection were in this show in Montclair, New Jersey, from November 1 to December 12, 2024.

Soho Photo Gallery, Germany, 1970

This online show, from September 11 to October 6, 2024, is a stroll back in time for me.  It consists of black and white photographs I took in Germany during the summer of 1970, when I was 17.  I was in the country for a summer job after my freshman year of college, trying to improve my language skills.

The pictures have a distinctly vintage feel.  They show mostly older people who seem to come from a much earlier era (long before 1970).    I got some inspiration for the project from a just completed spring semester photography course taught by the venerable (but not very talkative) Walker Evans, who was nearing the end of his life.  The images are in the People collection found here (scroll down to the name of the show).

The camera was a medium format Hasselblad, loaded with trusty Tri X film.

Soho Photo Gallery, Before We March—An American Moment, 2024

How would you feel if you were 16 or slightly older and about to be on display, before a massive crowd and a national television audience? Fourteen photographs attempting to answer this question—and specifically showing members of marching bands preparing to join the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade in 2019—was included in an exhibition at the Soho Photo Gallery, February 7 to March 2, 2024. The images are in the People collection found here (scroll down to the name of the show).

Soho Photo Gallery, Solitary Figures, 2023

JAMES M PEASLEE photography was one of five photographers included in an exhibit at the Soho Photo Gallery, June 13 to July 9, 2023. The Peaslee portfolio was titled Solitary Figures.

The thirteen pictures in the exhibit are shown below (in the order hung in the gallery), with titles and approximate dimensions of the exhibited prints (W x H in inches), excluding the mats. All are signed and part of a limited edition of 10. They are inkjet prints, mounted in 8 ply 20 by 24 inch cotton rag mats (or 20 by 27 for Circles, Newport Beach, and Dress Runner), without a frame.  All matts and inks used are archival quality. The full edition of 10 has not been sold for any of them and they are priced at $800 (plus NY sales tax, if applicable).  Prints in other sizes (and of other images shown on this website) are available on request.  For orders or additional information, use the contact page.

A printed artist brochure was available at the exhibit, which can be downloaded by clicking here.
